Secrets of the Total Solar eclipse – August 21 2017

August 21 2017. The total solar eclipse will happen at 4 degrees 46 minutes of Leo in the nakshatra Magha , within a few degrees of the fixed star Regulus. The symbol of the nakshatra Magha is the throne. For the first time in a 100 years, the eclipse path will be clearly visible across United States. In astronomy eclipse path just means where the eclipse is most visible. But in Vedic astrology, however the eclipse path denotes where the most changes, or impact due to the eclipse will be. Little known fact, while the eclipse may cause events,  the impact continues to happen after the eclipse as other planets transit that exact degree where the eclipse happened.

Eclipse signifies truth being hidden and then exposed as the shadow moves over. Into the light from the dark. So in the world of astrology , it signifies the same – exposing truth. Where though ? Since it is happening in Leo, close to Regulus, everything has to do with the Kings, or Rulers. Ruler of Leo is Sun signifying world leaders. Regulus denotes the heart of the lion, the courageous one. So the information that will get exposed will be relating to the ruling segment, or the government. What is fascinating is that Mercury is retrograde at this time as well. So the travel and communications sector is highlighted (like news and  mass media).  Mercury also signifies the past especially when its retrograde. So the truth that will be revealed will be regarding a significant fact from the past ruler-ship in Unites States. Something that the past government decided to keep hidden, will inevitably be dragged out into the light during this eclipse.

Now what happens after August 21st. Lets review all the transits to 4 degrees 46 minutes of Leo (I will refer to this as the “eclipse point” from now on)

  • Mars transits the eclipse point on September 3 – Mars (war, violence, riots, mutiny, decisive and impulsive action) events which are a direct resultant of the truths revealed by the solar eclipse will be prominent.
  • Mercury stations and turns direct on September 7 on the eclipse point – Again another significant problem event happens as the eclipse point is once again triggered, this time by Mercury. Communications, mass media, travel and the internet will all be players in this event.
  • Total Lunar eclipse in Jan 2018 – Whatever is exposed by the solar eclipse in August 2017 will culminate in an event in January 2018 when the cycle ends. The lunar eclipse is in the sign of cancer when moon intersects with Rahu. The six months between Aug 2017 and Jan 2018 will be worth paying attention to.

What does all this mean on a personal level in your own horoscope. Look at where Leo is in reference to your chart. Whichever house Leo falls in will be of primary importance during this time. Remember, always in an eclipse, something ends and a new venture begins.

The Astrology Of Relationships

As an astrologer I constantly come across young clients who have one important question weighing on their minds “When will I marry?”. I love doing these readings because I get to see the hope and budding love, the shine in their eyes as they dream of a future filled with happiness. Something about the innocence of young love,  brings me so much joy. Sometimes there is already a “significant other” and the question is “are we compatible?”. Relationship compatibility is a very important pillar of Jyotisha. Once again, its not magic or a romanticized “made in heaven” deal.  In my practice, and self-study (Swadhyaya) of Vedic Astrology, I’ve always tried to delve to the roots to understand why the compatibility rules were created by our sages. And almost always there is a deep psychological foundation to each rule of compatibility. This is the reason why I firmly believe there is never a “these two people should never marry” response. The compatibility level may be high or low based on the personality traits of the two people. I believe as an astrologer its my duty to educate my client as to what are the challenges in this relationship. And like I always say, knowledge is half the battle won. Knowing the issue exists, takes you one step closer to resolving it. And hence starts the process of evolution as we try to “fix” the compatibility issues to be with the one we love (which is a great motivation factor). This is a proactive and educated, enlightened approach to relationship issues.

Jyotisha in an arranged marriage :

Astrology has been used for ages as an important tool for match-making in societies like India where “arranged marriages” are prevalent. By doing so, the parents match the horoscopes to find the one with maximum compatibility. All this means is finding the person who is closest in personality so that the problems are less in married life. Does this mean India is the land of happy marriages? Absolutely not. There still are unhappy and unfulfilled relationships. It’s not their fault. It’s just the way society is designed. First the parents match horoscopes to put together two individuals who wont have major compatibility issues (meaning they don’t go for each other’s throats right away). And then after marriage when the two people start questioning the relationship, the unhappy parents may give in to stress, health problems etc. Rarely do they sit back and think what’s wrong here and how do I fix it? They live in denial not ever suspecting there is anything wrong in their lives. In reality, I don’t think there is anything wrong in the relationship itself, but the “unhappiness” arises from the fact that the individuals involved haven’t learnt to “love themselves”. When you don’t love yourself, you automatically start looking outside for love. And that is where the equations starts going sour. Solution – look towards the first house of self ! Center yourself, find yourself, be happy in yourself. When you do this, automatically everything else falls in place. All issues in your life vanish since now you are no longer focusing on the opposite person for happiness. You are with them because you love them unconditionally. Your happiness is being derived from within you.

Jyotisha in a “love” marriage :

So that was arranged marriages. Then what happens in the case of folks who “fall in love” and find their soul-mate. It’s interesting that the word “soul” also means psyche. In the psychology of Dr. Carl G. Jung, he explains this phenomenon of projecting our Anima and Animus (the contrasexual soul images in our unconscious) onto each other. The psyche seeks wholeness, and a union of our inner opposites is what Jung called the process of falling in love. When projection occurs, this process has begun as these images are now out in the open. We will learn a lot about ourselves by the people we either extremely love or hate. So when we feel attracted to somebody its always the polar opposite to our personality. The “attraction” is the psyche fulfilling a psychological desire to make itself “whole”. The traits we miss in ourselves, is what we look for in the other person. This is the first house and seventh house in Jyotisha. Directly opposite houses , mirror images. Hence “falling in love” happens. Once marriage happens, obviously the “newness” and “excitement” fades away after a while and the exact thing that attracted you to the person will start annoying you to no end. This is what we call “reality hit”. When relationships reach this stage, many people addicted to the excitement start looking outside their primary marriage or partnership. Many relationships end and the alchemical process begins all over again with someone else. Some go on to marry the person with whom they feel they are “in love with,” and later become disillusioned when they realize that they have married a person who is not who they thought they were. Its the cycle of life. After many such broken relationships and picking pieces up , rebuilding, etc the soul realizes there is only one place to find true happiness .. The first house of self ! We reach the same conclusion as the earlier example of arranged marriages. The key is to find happiness within and when you love somebody , love them unconditionally… Not with a need to complete yourself.

In Vedic astrology the first house rules the “self” and the seventh house (which is opposite to the first house) rules “one-one relationships” or contracts between two people. For 95% people one-one contract is a marriage contract. And hence the seventh house takes on anything to do with marriages and spouse. When an astrologer analyzes a chart, they can easily foretell if the individual will face problems in married life. Typically there will be seventh house planets (signifying energies in that area of life which need to be resolved) or the ruler of the seventh house could be placed with a malefic or in a malefic house or could have malefic aspects. These are just a few of the indicators. Most astrologers will predict ” difficulties in marriage” and leave it at that. I believe this should be taken a step forward. The idea that there is a “difficulty” itself is incorrect. All that activity in the seventh house just means the soul has that area of life to learn and understand in this lifetime. This is why circumstances come around in the lifetime which trigger that soft spot hence causing heartache. However it should be remembered that these problems will lead the person to understand what is missing and resolve it. This is called soul-growth. For example, say Person XYZ has Mars in the seventh house. All this means is that this person is exceptionally passionate when it comes to relationships. The presence of a fiery planet like Mars there causes instability in the feelings. When this person does not see a similar level of passion from his/her spouse, this leads to anger, violence and lashing out. The spouse on the other hand views this person as having “anger issues”. Parents and friends are quick to jump in and suggest therapy. The problem is compounded if the spouse has moon related aspects to the seventh house. Now our person XYZ will view the spouse as emotional/needy/clingy. Things go into a downward spiral until one day the relationship breaks down. Person XYZ had an important learning – when issues arise and that Mars gets activated (which it will), learn to bypass it or resolve it by self-analysis. The spouse on the other hand has to learn to not give in to the emotional moon at the first sight of an issue. These are band-aids to handle the seventh house planets. However the biggest lesson for both people is to ground themselves in their first house of self and learn self-love.

Whatever sign is on the descendant or 7th-house cusp, whatever planets reside therein are a detailed picture of what we lack in ourselves and will learn in this lifetime with or without our intention or consent. So we might as well take a proactive approach and learn about this part of us to experience the more productive aspects of that particular energy.

Among my clients I see people with Mars (planet of action, directness) in the 7th or ruler of the 7th telling me how violent their ex-husbands were, how they have constantly attracted aggressive partners. Folks with the Moon there tell me how needy and emotional and needy their partners are. Uranus – unpredictable, detached and aloof. Saturn – cold, disciplined, distant and critical. Jupiter – extravagant, inflated, self-indulgent. Very high level and simple descriptions, could be a lot more based on aspects form other planets or Dasha sequence etc. But a good astrologer, can look at your 7th house, or the aspects to your Venus and the ruler, and will be able to gently guide you to what your own needs are in relationships, which can be different from everyone else’s. Always remembering we are all unique and shedding all judgement aside. You may throw aside all socially accepted constructs of marriage, children, house etc and instead just decide to travel the world with your partner living as minimalists in one of those tiny houses. This is totally fine, and it just means the other stuff is not something your soul needs to learn in this lifetime.

So embrace yourself and look at every problem as an opportunity to attain soul-growth and improve yourself. As Carl Jung said –

“Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darkness of other people”.

Samskaras and Vedic Astrology.

What is a Samskara?

In ancient Hindu texts Samskara is defined as patterned behaviors, subconsciously conditioned tendencies. In soul theory I liken them to the talents or impressions the soul has been conditioned to in a past life and brought along with it to this life time. These are in simple terms habits. The prefix “Sam” means “well planned” and “kara” means “action undertaken”.  Each time the person does this action it leaves a subtle impression in his subconscious thus hardening the action’s justification further. This is how the habit is formed. Over a period of time the impressions are so strong they convert the habit into an addiction. At this stage, the being no longer remembers how the action / habit first started. It becomes a way of life, the soul doesn’t question it anymore. The turning point comes when awakening happens and the samskara one day results in an outcome which touches the soul at its core and shakes its beliefs. When this time comes, the soul decides to re-asses why this happened and the journey towards healing begins.

Before I go further I would like to ascertain that samskaras can be positive as well. There could be a samskara that brings innate joy and bliss to the soul. However in this post I will be talking about a negative (challenging) samskara.

Being a human being we all have to deal with multiple samskaras, some of which we will resolve, heal and evolve from in this lifetime. That is the goal of the soul. The path to moksha or enlightenment is traversed this way. In Jyotisha (Vedic Astrology) the soul level samskaras (the ones we carry over from past lifetimes) can be discovered and a good astrologer can work with the client in identifying the root to bring about healing. I will get into those details later.

Now let me tell you about a client of mine. Let’s call her Mrs X. During her natal chart reading we talked about her marriage , job, kids . When we completed predictions, I like to do a karmic reading using Rahu/Ketu and the luminaries Sun and Moon. Right about that time she started talking about a very prominent samskara she had to deal with.

Perfectionism.

Yes, in plain terms it just means doing what she is doing in the best possible way. Sounds innocent enough. Well, it’s not. The problem arises when in attaining this goal, many negative traits arise. One of them being, judging others for not doing a certain action in the “right way”. Again the “right way” is what she perceived to be right. One man’s right is another man’s wrong. It’s all a matter of perception. And this is where the samskara becomes a hindrance to the soul’s growth. Furthermore, trying to be the “best” at something naturally takes the joy out of doing that action since the person is always focused on attaining a certain goal. It brings along with it competitiveness, self-judgement and self-deprecation.

For a long time Mrs X lived this way, believing firmly that she was right. Of course she should be the best at everything she did. Of course she will do every task herself because nobody else can do it right. Of course, she will work day and night at her job to attain this level of perfectionism. How did this impact her life? This trait places undue burden on the soul as the “bar of perfectionism” is raised higher every time. At work she pushed herself to live up to her self-proclaimed standards and ended up burning out. One should not perform any work/activity to reach a certain level or standard. A balanced and enlightened soul performs actions because of the sheer joy it derives from it. However her reasoning being misplaced, she was under tremendous pressure and subsequently went into self-criticism. She failed in health and became sick. At home, her sense of “being perfect” naturally extended to her child. Imposing “perfect values” and being a “perfect girl” on her, gradually resulted in her pulling away from her mother. Since this was Mrs X’s soul’s normal state, it was perplexing to her at the time. “Why is my daughter distancing herself from me ?” “Doesn’t she love me anymore?” She quickly spiraled down into self-pity and depression, which are by the way other samskaras or habits of the soul. That’s an important point to note. Samskaras, good or bad, can give rise to child samskaras, again good or bad in nature. When her relationship with her daughter suffered, that was her wake up call. She needed answers and hence came to me for a reading

The Turning Point

Every soul has a turning point, a time in their lives when they question something. This is where the healing begins. On the proverbial “road of life”, which the soul is traversing, when this turning point comes, the soul moves to the side of this road and sits down to understand what’s going on here. Alternatively some souls can go from on unfulfilling samskara to a worse one like drug or alcoholic addiction. But instead, when the person questions why something is happening and digs deep within himself for an answer, the process of enlightenment begins. For Mrs X this turning point was the breakdown of her relationship with her daughter. This gave her the motivation to “fix” the problem so she can have a better relationship with her. So the process of self-analysis began.

A quick note here before I move on. Always, always remember, the soul is never at fault. Each of us are at various rungs of the enlightenment ladder but all progressing albeit at different speeds towards the same source, Universal God. So in order to understand the problem and fix it, you have to first let go of any “blaming” tendency or finger-pointing. Enlightenment begins when you realize that nobody is at fault. We are all just learning.

Ok now moving on.

Being an astrologer I see 95% of my clients come to me when they are at such a turning point in their lives. They are looking for answers. And the natal chart provides a glimpse into samskaras, mental tendencies. In Mrs X’s case for example, The Sun which signifies ego is hedged between two malefics (Mars and Ketu), immediately highlighting to me that her soul has a problem with ego. Sun signifies ego. Didn’t take me long to realize the “perfectionism” comes from a place of ego and “fear of failure”. Her soul thought it was too good to fail, “I am always right”, “am the best”. Past life impressions created a samskara for good reasons. If the samskara were not there, enlightenment wouldn’t happen. So how do we fix this? This is where I bring in the “5 Whys”

The 5 Whys

From Wikipedia

“5 Whys is an iterative interrogative technique used to explore the cause-and-effect relationships underlying a particular problem. The primary goal of the technique is to determine the root cause of a defect or problem by repeating the question “Why?”

Research proves that asking 5 “whys” always gets us to the root cause of any problem. Try it out in your life as well. You will see it’s true.

I apply this principle to helping my clients. When we know the “flaw”, the path to resolving it starts with asking the question why. With Mrs X the results were amazing.

Why do you want to work myself to a point where your health suffers?

Because I want to do it the best possible way.

Why do you want to do it?

Because nobody else can do it well, and it won’t get done the right way

Why is that a problem?

Because the task will fail and I don’t like that

Why don’t you like it?

Because then I will get blamed for its failure

Why is that a problem?

Because I don’t like to fail.

5 Whys. And where did we reach? Fear of Failure.

This is why I said, the soul is not at fault. At the root there is always an innocence. In this case – Fear of failure. It’s a very real fear at the heart of the soul. Which then gives rise to a bunch of negative samskaras which become ingrained in the subconscious and before you know it you are looking in the mirror and staring at a beaten down, workaholic, unhappy mother who everybody is quick to blame. But at the root, the problem is innocent.

The Solution

Now that I reached at the root cause with the help of self-analysis and tools of Vedic astrology, it was time to resolve it and free the soul from the burden. How do we do this? Easy. You create the seed of a positive samskara. Create your own samskara. It will be a small, weak baby, but will grow stronger over time and repetition. As we talked about earlier, every samskara hardens over time. So all you have to do is go to the root and create a baby samskara. A positive one. Why? Because the rule of this universe is – Positive always trumps the negative. Just a matter of when. But it always does.

So Mrs X created a positive short circuit at the core of her soul.

Every time the voice came from inside saying “be perfect”, the opposing short-circuit piped “Doesn’t matter if it’s perfect or not. Derive joy and bliss from doing it and leave the results to God.”

Every time the negative samskara whispered “but you will fail”, the positive one said “It’s okay, failure is just another step towards learning a new lesson and evolving. It’s not the destination it’s the journey that matters.”

Today she lives a happy and fulfilling life with her family. Yes she still works but she does it because she derives joy from it. In fact her performance at work has improved since she is mentally balanced and her health has improved.

So always remember, if you have a samskara that is hindering your progress as a soul, the answer to fix that is within you. The 5 Whys will get you to the root cause and subsequently all you have to do is place a positive short circuit at the root. Human Mind is an amazing entity with a great power for learning. The positive thought will take root and over a period of time it will become a positive samskara.

French Election 2017 – Astrological Prediction

The 2017 French Elections is said to be the least predictable in decades! Both the front-runners Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen are equally matched and neck to neck in polls. The first round was held on 23 April 2017. As no candidate won a majority, a run-off election will be held on 7 May 2017.

I analyzed the birth charts and transits on the day, cross-referenced with the chart of France. Everything is so close in terms of natal aspects as well as trigger points (transits and dasha sequence). Before we delve in, I would like to affirm – I do these analysis to better understand and teach Vedic astrology. I am not a political person and have no bias one way or the other.

Chart of France (6th October 1958, 18:30, Paris)

France as a country just went through a horrendous Saturn return. Saturn opposes Mars in the chart, showing that each Saturn return brings with it violence (The last one in 86-87 brought with is a string of Hezbollah bombings). Buckling under the recent attacks, the country was tested like never before. “Who are our allies and enemies?” Pondering these questions, now the country is poised on the threshold of a new dawn. With the election a new person will take over the helm and lead the country out of these dark and troublesome times.

Election Day Chart (5 May 2017, 21:00, Paris)

A very prominent transit on the day is the conjunction of Mercury and Uranus on May 8th. The results of this election will be very unexpected and surprising.

Emmanuel Macron (21 December 1977, 10:40, Amiens)

Capricorn ascendant shows a born leader (Capricorn being the natural tenth house). Staunch, stubborn, rooted, grounded, his ideals are all that matter to him. Chart ruler Saturn sits in Leo the royal sign showing the soul’s inclination towards positions of power. Being in the eighth house however it shows a hidden and secretive nature, not to mention a magnetic and mysterious personality. People who meet him for the first time will be intrigued, wanting to know him more (though he may not give too much away). Chart ruler in eighth makes him interested in psychology, and research-oriented and generally very hard working. Saturn is also ruler of his second house which shows this person’s wealth comes from administration of other people’s resources, joint investments, and politics. He was an investment banker before his venture into politics.

Aspects on Election Day – Jupiter is in the ninth house in his birth chart activating Rahu (his main dasha ruler). In the navamsa, Jupiter is aspecting the exalted Venus in his second house (Second house signifies homeland/country). Saturn moves on top of his sun (bringing hard-work). Rahu aspects natal Saturn (magnifying first and second house properties i.e. self and country/material wealth). In the navamsa we find the exalted Venus in the second house, with the ruler Jupiter strongly placed in its moolatrikona sign.

Marine Le Pen (5 August 1968, 11:20, Neuilly-Sur-Seine)

Virgo ascendant with Venus and Jupiter in the twelfth house. This chart is definitely showing charity and “doing good for others” quality. Virgo being the natural sixth house shows a service-oriented nature. Chart ruler is in the eleventh which is once again a humanitarian sign albeit with a debilitated Mars. Ketu in the first house shows the soul has less concern for oneself and more for the spouse (Rahu in seventh). Rulers of second (wealth/speech), fourth (home/mother), seventh (one-one relationship) and ninth (religion/spirituality) all go to the twelfth house (which signifies loss/escape/charity). This one statement pretty much sums her personality/life. No relationship with her mother, failed relationship, not very religious… but at the same time all the more stronger due to these events (since Jupiter does signify higher knowledge and is a friend to the chart, the soul does learn and rise instead of being depressed and sinking low)

Aspects on Election Day – Jupiter is in the first house exactly on her ascendant bringing hope and optimism. Rahu is in her twelfth aspecting natal Jupiter and Venus. Rahu in the twelfth signifies working with foreign countries. She is in Rahu-Jupiter dasha which makes these transits all the more prominent at this time in her life. However what doesn’t look promising in her chart is the fact that she is going through a Sade Sati (Saturn transit over moon once every 29 years). This period of time is most likely very depressing for her. The last time this happened in her life was 1988 when her mother left her (moon signifies mother and add to that, moon is in her fourth house which once again signifies mother and ruler goes to twelfth signifying loss).

Conclusion

Both the candidates have very similar aspects and dasha sequence. However they cannot be more different as personalities. It’s very close in terms of prediction. Seeing the planetary aspects on Election Day I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some confusion leading to a re-count. At the end however, owing to stronger planets in second (and ruler Jupiter in Moolatrikona) Macron will win. A very strong indicator against Ms.Le Pen is the Sade Sati timeframe. I find it highly unlikely she can win the election during this transit (Last time this transit happened in her life was in ’86-’87. That year Ms Le Pen’s mother left home)
